Our reasoning & expectations behind this.
We intend to modify the fixing points, and make carbon fibre handles as despite the extra weight (when taken as part of the winter walking kit) it seems to us to be a better option than using the ice axes, it also means the ice axes are available if needed.
We also intend to drill some holes in the shovels so they can be used as dead man snow ankers.
