Handheld CB radios.

Our reasoning & expectations behind this.

It seems CB radios are used quite a lot off-road, so we thought it would be a good idea to include one in our kit.
Our first thought was to fit one in the van; however, we eventually opted for a pair of handheld CBs with aerial connections in the van (currently one fitted). This option means we can use one of our radios out of the van on foot or in another vehicle to communicate with the van, or both of our radios away from the van on foot or in other vehicles if needed. The radios run on AA batteries, rechargeable AA batteries, or 12V from the van. They can also recharge the AA  rechargeable batteries in the power pack from the 12V in the van.
We may still fit a permanent CB in the van if we can find one that attaches and is controlled by the head units through the aux connection.

Handheld CB radios.
Will run on primary or rechargeable AA cells or 12v from the van, depending on the base fitted.

Our conclusions.

Pros.
The portable units seem to be more versatile than the fixed ones.
Having the two units makes it possible to monitor two channels simultaneously.
Microphone/speaker not restricted by wire length. (except when connected to van aerials).
Multiple power options.
One or both can be used away from the van. (base camp unit, other Vehicle, or on foot).
Radios can be moved to obtain better reception. (even if the van can’t).

Cons.
Batters need to be charged. (except when connected to the van).
Ease to forget to pack in the van, (at home and away).
They take up more of the limited & valuable storage space than a fixed one.
